Pumpkin Patch!

Granny V called us on Saturday and asked if we would like to join her and Aunt Maddy at the pumpkin patch. It was a really cold day, but we had been wanting to take Paxton to a pumpkin patch so we agreed.

He was excited to ride in the pumpkin wagon:

There were lots of pumpkins to choose from:

But he found one he liked:

There was also a sunflower tunnel that he kept trying to run through:

And we got to do a hay ride!

Pax with Daddy:

Mommy:

And Granny V:

He loved the hay ride.

After that, we checked out the chickens:

And the turkey:

And he posed with Daddy in the big pumpkin:

By the end, it was definitely nap time and all he wanted to do was run around by himself. He didn't want to sit on the hay bale for a cute fall picture.

At all...

It was a fun little mid-morning outing and definitely something we will repeat next year (and maybe one more time this year).

Roosevelt

Named for the train stop we got off on to procure him, Roosevelt was our answer to the nagging guilt stemming from leaving our toddler behind for five days.

He was procured at the Build-a-Bear at Navy Pier. He was chosen with love, stuffed by a loving Daddy, given a "bath" by Mommy, and even was the recipient of a special message recorded by Mommy and Daddy.

But it doesn't end with two adults in a toy store, rubbing a satin heart on our faces for beauty, our muscles for strength and our hearts for love while a group of five-year-olds fidgeted impatiently behind us. We carried that little dog with us for the next two days of our trip and took pictures with him and of him throughout Chicago.

He visited Wrigley Field:

Ate Chicago dogs by the bean:

Checked out the killer views at Navy Pier:

Saw the fish at Rainforest Cafe:

Got nervous on the drawbridge by the Magnificent Mile:

Saw a model of Chicago a little closer to his size:

Checked out a robot at the Museum of Science and Industry:

And even got his own seat on the train:

(Hopefully this is something that means something to Pax someday, otherwise it was kind of an embarrassing way to travel around the city)

We gave it to him as soon as we got home out of sheer excitement. Approximately thirty seconds later, he had figured out how to activate the voice box...we have heard our special message non-stop since then. Every night we put him in bed with Roosevelt and his other stuffed friends and every night, as we close his door, the special message travels through his room, and activates twinges of the pride we felt in doing something special for our little boy, and a brief flashback of the awkward glances towards two adults pulling a Navy Pier t-shirt-wearing stuffed puppy out of a bag for a picture.

Chicago!!

As nervous as we were to leave Paxton, we sure were excited to get the trip started! We even paused for an airport photo.

We made it safely and right on schedule. We checked into our hotel and went straight to the front desk for dinner advice (and directions). The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Harry gave us a map and circled everything we needed to see during our trip. He told us to start with the Magnificent Mile which had tons of shops and restaurants. We figured out the train and made it downtown. We were immediately floored by the buildings. I mean, OKC has buildings...but not like this.

We walked around a little and spotted Harry Caray's. we knew it was a famous local place so we decided that we would go there for dinner.

It was very fancy and we were a little under-dressed but it was tasty and that's what matters. We walked around a little more and went back to the hotel early. We knew the next day would be busy.

Friday, we ate some donuts and decided that we would try the trolley tour Harry had recommended. We had a little trouble finding the stop, and I got hungry before we even made it. It turned out to be a good thing because we ate lunch at Potbelly's. It was amazing. After that, we hopped on the trolley to see the city.

One of the first stops the trolley made was Navy Pier. That was on our list, so we hopped off.

It was a pretty fun place, and for some reason not crowded at all. We got Paxton a special souvenir (who deserves his own post), and some ice cream. The views were amazing.

By the time we got back to the trolley, there was a line so it took us a few trolleys to be able to board. Luckily they come every 20 minutes so it wasn't too bad. We wanted to eat at Hard Rock, which was a few stops down the line. We saw some more of Chicago, and then made it to the restaurant. Hard Rock was right next to Rainforest Cafe, which for some reason is one of my very favorite places. Jared doesn't share my enthusiasm so we just stopped in to look around.

After dinner, we had tickets to an improv show that we were pretty excited about. We had a little trouble getting directions because we thought it was at the Conservatory...turns out it was at the CORNservatory. It was hilarious and we had a great time.

Saturday, we slept in and had an early lunch at TGIFriday's. It was kind of a waste of a Chicago meal, but we wanted to get to the trolley quickly. Our tickets came with three "neighborhood tours" so we wanted to do the West Neighborhoods tour which would go to China Town, Greek Town and Little Italy. The trolley picked us up at Millennium Park, so we stopped to visit the Bean.

Then we started our neighborhood tour.

China Town:

We also saw where the Chicago Fire started:

And Oprah's studio:

And some cool Chicago signs:

That night we wanted to go to the Water Tower, which was a vertical mall. We weren't super impressed, but we did get to try Chicago pizza which was delicious. By that time, we thought we had the public transportation system figured out, so we hopped on a bus that we thought was going to a train station. Either we were wrong or we gave up too quickly, because we ended up a little lost. Thanks to Jared's great navigating (and the iPhone...), we made it to the train safely. Unfortunately, the stop we found had huge spiders in the ceiling that were starting to drop down for the night. I was glad when that train came.

Sunday morning, we got up early for breakfast at the hotel. After that, we made our way to the Museum of Science and Industry.

It was pretty fun, but definitely would have been more fun with Pax. My favorite part was the ice cream cart outside where we got ice cream bars.

Our trolley was still about 45 minutes away for the North Neighborhood tour we wanted to take next, so we visited the Bean again since we were right there. We got Chicago dogs for lunch at a little stand in the park.

The North Neighborhood tour was really neat. We got to see Lincoln Park and the zoo. Jared was most excited for the Wrigley Field stop. We got out, thinking we would just be able to walk in and look at the field. That wasn't the case. You could take a tour for $25 each, but we didn't really want to do that, so we ended up shopping at the Cubs stores outside the field for a souvenir for a certain toddler.

The sun was doing some pretty neat things on the way back to Millennium Park.

Our tour guide told us we couldn't leave Chicago without getting a cheeseburger at Billy Goat Tavern, so we stopped there for dinner.

It was pretty tasty. We might have done a little more shopping on the Magnificent Mile, and a certain toddler might have ended up with another souvenir.

The next morning, we had to get up super early and head to the airport. By 11:30 that morning, our family was whole again.

18-month Stats

Paxton had his 18-month check-up today and everything looks great!

Stats-
Head: 75th percentile (this was the first time it wasn't 50 since birth!)
Height: 34 inches, 95th percentile
Weight: 28.4 pounds, 75th percentile

I'm thankful that he's growing and developing just like he should!

I have noticed that since we got back from Chicago he is kind of clingy to me. I don't know if that's what it was or if he is starting to recognize the doctor's office as the place where he gets shots, but either way he wanted me to hold him a lot of the time. That is weird for him since he usually would rather be down on the floor on his own, but I enjoyed it. While I was holding him, I would ask him what the monkey says and he would get really excited and make loud monkey noises and then we would both crack up. I think Dr. Campbell heard us from outside the door...

He got three shots today including his flu shot and did pretty good. He stopped crying with some Tylenol and "Twinkle Twinkle". He was even happy all through a quick mall trip and lunch, which he hasn't been for past shots...usually he wants to go straight home to bed. He took a good 2.5 hour nap and seems great!

Ketchup

Wow, I haven't posted in a long time! I don't like going that long between posts because I forget what we've been up to!

Here's the catch-up:

1. Paxton is still obsessed with Scarlett. He likes to try to get her to chase him.

YouTube Video

2. We celebrated my birthday! We got lots of family time in and some delicious meals: Homerun Sliders with Granny V, Uncle Josh and Candy; Poblano Grill with Grandpa, Uncle Josh and Uncle Mason, and Granny Pat; BJ's with Gramsy and the aunts, and Harry Caray's with Jared. I got lots of amazing presents (including a bread maker and a trip to Chicago!).

Happy birthday singing:

Pax even wore his I love Mom shirt and took a picture with me:

3. Paxton is officially obsessed with Cheeto's. He grabbed one off my plate one day and whines for them every time he sees the bag.

He even got the bag down from the table and had a little floor snack:

4. He finally mastered the wave!! We have been trying to get him to wave since he was 10 months. He always just looked at us like it was the dumbest thing. He finally decided maybe he wasn't too cool for it and will wave and say "bah bah" (bye-bye) now.

5. He has started loving hats. If Jared is wearing a hat, he will take it off and either put it back on Jared or put it on himself.

He also puts other things on his head and says "haaaa" (hat) which is pretty cute.

6. He brings his blankies and assorted stuffed animals into the living room every day. He usually climbs right up on the ottoman and sits there happily.

7. I was really sad to leave this sweet face for FIVE whole days, but...

Jared and I got to go to Chicago (which deserves a post of its own)!! We had a blast. We missed Paxton LIKE CRAZY and I got sad every time I saw a stroller, but he was in good hands and was VERY happy to see us when we got home.

8. We got home yesterday and spent the day soaking up our little toddler (who turned into a KID while we were gone--he seems so much bigger) and relaxing.
